The banks of the Hudson River served as a stopping place for Henry Hudson and his ship the Halfmoon in 1609, as the explorer sought a Northwest passage to the Orient. Later, fur-trading post called Fort Orange would be established by the Dutch West India Company. After the British drove the Dutch out in 1688, the settlement was granted a city charter and renamed after the Duke of Albany.
