The banks of the Hudson River served as a stopping place for Henry Hudson and his ship the Halfmoon in 1609, as the explorer sought a Northwest passage to the Orient. After the British drove the Dutch out in 1688, the settlement was granted a city charter and renamed after the Duke of Albany. This Charter is still in effect today in the Capital City, the oldest one in the country. We encourage you to experience the city and county of Albany and the Capital Region of New York State.
