Come, re-live history with us in Allegany County. In the early 1800's when much of New York was already settled, most of the area was a wilderness, inhabited by Native Americans. This slow development is still apparent in the abundance of charming Victorian villages and towns. Historic districts in Alfred, Angelica and Cuba showcase a variety of architectural styles that have emerged over the years. Neighborhoods and small museums dotting the County preserve the past.
Allegany County offers unique cultural experiences, from a weekend tour of 25-30 artists' studios, to performing arts, to special exhibits and concerts. The many public libraries and historical societies are a rich and abundant resource for those wishing to delve into regional history or genealogy. In addition, there are landmark structures and points of interest to please even those with the most discriminating tastes.
Wellsville is in a unique geographical location, at the top of the Eastern Triple Divide, the cusp of the three major watersheds in the Eastern United States. The Genesee River flows through Wellsville, north to Rochester and Lake Ontario and then on to the St. Lawrence River and the Atlantic Ocean. Just southwest of Wellsville, the Honeoye Creek flows west to the Oswayo and then the Allegheny River, then to the Ohio and the Mississippi River, eventually to the Gulf of Mexico. And just over Jericho Hill to the east of Wellsville in the Town of Andover, the water flows to the east down the Kanakadea Valley to the Canisteo River, eventually to the Susquehanna River and on to the Atlantic Ocean. The actual Triple Divide is a point, 22 miles south of Wellsville in Potter County, PA and can be found on Google Earth. There, at the exact point, a bucket of water can be dumped and the water will flow three ways, theoretically unimpeded; north, southeast and southwest.
