About half-way between Toronto and New York City, close to the center of New York State, and in the heart of the Finger Lakes region, lies Tompkins County. Wooded hills, rolling valleys, and high table lands studded with clear fresh lakes stretch over nearly 500 square miles. The hills, lakes and streams cut between two deep glacial ravines, combining to give the country and region a rich expanse of natural beauty that is as conspicuous-and as important- to residents and visitors today as it must have been to the first settlers, late in the eighteenth century.

The city of Ithaca is the county seat of Tompkins County. It sits on the southern shore of Cayuga Lake, in Central New York. It is named for the Greek island of Ithaca.

Cayuga Lake is the longest of central New York's glacial Finger Lakes, and is the second largest in surface area (marginally smaller than Seneca Lake) and second largest in volume. It is just under 40 miles long. Its average width is 1.7 miles, and it is 3.5 mi wide at its widest point near Aurora. It is approximately 435 ft deep at its deepest point. Cayuga Lake is very popular among recreational boaters. A large state marina and boat launch is located at the southern end of the lake in Ithaca (Allan H. Treman State Marine Park, the largest inland marina in New York). There are two yacht clubs on the western shore: Ithaca Yacht Club a few miles north of Ithaca, and Red Jacket Yacht Club just south of Canoga. There are several other marinas and boat launches scattered along the lake shore.

There are 26 wineries around Cayuga Lake, and visiting one or more of them can lead to some of the most delightful experiences you'll have. All the wineries offer distinctive wines in beautiful settings, yet each is unique, offering their own specialties and personalities. They offer award-winning varieties such as Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, to name just a few. Some wineries specialize in distilled spirits like port, brandy, limoncella and vodka; there is even an expert in mead and one in hard cider.

Ithaca is home to Cornell University, an Ivy League school, Ithaca College, located just south of the city and Tompkins Cortland Community College. Ithaca is known for its resident musicians, who contribute to a music scene which is unusually talented and diverse for such a small town. These musicians have come from many backgrounds to pursue their careers in Ithaca; the School of Music at Ithaca College attracts talented musicians, some of whom remain in Ithaca after graduating and take up work as performing musicians or in the sound engineering field.
